Tsavo East
Tsavo East forms the larger share of one of the biggest game reserves in the World. Sitting in South Western Kenya, Tsavo National Park covers an area larger than Wales. The reserve is divided unequally into East and West sections by the Nairobi - Mombasa Railway. It is inhabited by huge numbers of wild animals, including one of the largest populations of elephants (around 10,000). The famous "red elephant" of Tsavo has a hide permanently stained by the bright orange-red dust that covers the area.
During the building of the railway, two lions earned a reputation as "The maneaters of Tsavo" after they ate so many of the railroad workers that the work virtually ground to a halt. When the lions were finally killed, they were found to be maneless males, something which rarely occurs elsewhere in Africa. The descendants of these lions can still be found in Tsavo, where very few male lions have more than a small beard and a mohawk hairstyle! This is thought to be due to the extreme conditions in Tsavo, where much of the land is little more than desert scrub for most of the year. The only continuous source of water in the whole reserve is the Galana river, which is a haven for huge Nile Crocodiles and Hippopotamus.
