Maasai Mara
The Maasai Mara is a 200sq mile area of grassland plains, woodland and rivers in northwest Kenya. It is a continuation of the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania. At over 5,000 feet above sea level it is more temperate than the hot plains of Tsavo (though still considerably warmer than Scotland!).
Each year the Mara hosts one of the few great migrations left in the animal kingdom, when almost 2 million Wildebeest along with
1/
2 million each of Zebra and thomson's Gazelle cross the Mara River, following the routes to fresh pastures that countless generations of these animals have trod over the centuries.
The only people allowed to live in the Mara are the semi-nomadic Maasai, who consider these plains and large parts of the Serengeti their home. It takes approximately six months to build one of the small mud and dung Maasai villages, so they tend to stay in more or less the same area for extended periods before moving their cattle on to new grazing areas. The Maasai men are an imposing sight, in their red robes, they move with a regal grace. The Lions have learned to respect and keep a safe distance from tall men in red, as the Maasai still hunt lions as a right of passage for young men.
